History and Development

Promoting academic exchange both domestically and internationally, and enhancing public aesthetic education.

The National University of Tainan, located in Tainan City, which is regarded as ‘the capital of culture and history’, and has rich traditional arts and cultural heritage. Initially established as a teacher training school, it evolved into a teachers' college before achieving university status. Over the years, it has played a pivotal role in cultivating exceptional art educators and professionals.

In 2004, the department changed its name as “Department of Fine Arts” by the agreement of the Ministry of Education. By 2006, the department expanded to include both undergraduate and postgraduate programs. In 2014, it was rebranded as the Department of Visual Arts and Design to better reflect its comprehensive focus on art practice, art theory, and art administration. Additionally, it offers high school teacher training programs in the fields of arts and humanities, contributing to the enhancement of art education and cultural development nationwide.

History and Development:

  • 1950:Art Department was established in Provincial Tainan Teachers School. Student enrollment continued until August1958.
  • August 1962: School became Provincial Tainan Teachers Junior College. Arts and Crafts program was established.
  • July 1987:School became Provincial Teachers College. Arts and Crafts program established in Department of Primary Education.
  • July 1991:School renamed as National Tainan Teachers College.
  • August 1998: Department of Arts and Crafts Education was established.
  • 2002:Graduate Institute of Visual Arts was established.
  • 2002:Curriculum for teacher training was established to qualify students as high school teachers in the “Field of Arts and Humanities ”.
  • 2004:Department was renamed as Department of Fine Arts.
  • 2006:Integration of BA and MA programs in the Department of Fine.
  • 2014:Department was renamed as Department of Visual Arts and Design.
  • 2014:Master Program for Continuing Education, Graduate Institute of Visual Arts and Design was established.
  • 2020:Graduate Institute of Animation and Multimedia Design was merged with Department of Visual Arts and Design. renamed as Master Program of Animation and Multimedia Design, Department of Visual Arts and Design
  • 2023 :Master Program, Department of Visual Arts and Design was renamed as Master Program of Visual Arts, Department of Visual Arts and Design. Master Program of Animation and Multimedia Design, Department of Visual Arts and Design was renamed as Master Program of Design , Department of Visual Arts and Design.
